BioMy work has the traditional air of tightly rendered nature illustrations but with a highly emotional range of surreal metaphorical themes. My paintings and sketches present my vision of life’s struggles and triumphs that are largely autobiographical. The subjects are inspired directly from living organisms witnessed on my own extensive travel to wild places and the research specimens at the California Academy of Sciences. I use acrylic on maple panel in thin gradient washes leaving the wood grain visible. Over the years, I have developed a complex process of masking and staining so the natural grain can collaborate with each composition. I have had several solo exhibitions featuring my large-scale paintings and installations, and have participated in several group shows across the country. I am a self-taught artist currently living and working in Oakland, CA.
